The One Thing

Jesus might say:

"You are troubled and distracted by so many things, but only one thing is necessary," (Luke 10:38-42) and that is communing intimately with me.  You don't need to prepare anything to come to me. Stop slaving to serve me. Come, sit here by me, and open the ears of your spirit, for I have much to tell you. Great and unsearchable secrets (Jeremiah 33:3), love, and encouragement ... challenges and even correction. But the things I say will increase your faith, and your ability to love. Indeed, the things you hear from me create your faith, for faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of Christ (Romans 10:17). And that, my child, is all you need to find rest from your anxieties, distractions and fears.

Faith

Listening

More faith

More ability to hear

Fruit

Love

Rest

All you need you will find here, next to me, listening to my words, and in the silence, listening to the beat of my heart with you head upon my breast.

Love,

Jesus

Surfing life’s emotional waves

Jesus might say:

Disappointment. All my children experience it. I have experienced it as well. It's part of the ups and downs of life. Like the waves of the ocean, emotions flow out negatively and come back in positively   ̶   over and over. As much as it is possible, ride the waves. Allow yourself to float in and out, and try not to force your emotions. For what you feel right now will surely change. Although in eternity you will find the stability of joy. But in this earthly life, I am always with you, a Life Preserver, who will never let you drown. Rest in me.

Love,

Jesus

Deep Calls to Deep

I do not want to know you on a surface level. I give the deepest part of me to know the deepest part of you, the innermost, intimate part of your being. I beseech you to open up to me, to let me in. Although I am the infinitely powerful, almighty God, I am also safe with my children. My great love compels me to open myself up to you. Come my child and commune with me.

"Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterfalls; all your waves and breakers have swept over me. By day the LORD directs his love, at night his song is with me—a prayer to the God of my life" (Psalm 42:7-8).

Love,

How to hear from my Word

Jesus might say:

Many read the Bible at face value, as if they were reading a normal book and feel they have gained understanding and know how to apply it. Egregious things have been done in my name because these readers have a flat, human understanding of the Bible. My Word will be misinterpreted unless I, myself, am revealed in it by my Holy Spirit. That’s because my Word is living and active (Hebrews 4:12): If you allow it, the words of the Bible actively get inside your heart and change you from the inside out.

My Word is me talking to you, and you cannot hear me properly unless that Word is illuminated and infused by my Holy Spirit. Whenever you open the Bible, say a prayer that my Holy Spirit will show you what I'm saying through it, and help you to apply it and hear me speaking directly to you.

Love,

Jesus

Thanking is Giving

Giving until exhausted

Jesus might say:

You may run to and fro serving me, giving until you are exhausted. You may give inordinate amounts of money to my causes, thinking you are bringing me joy, puffing yourself up. But I own all the gold in all the world, and I desire faith and rest, above sacrifice. I need nothing from man. Do not delude yourself by becoming drained for me. Burnout is not obedience. So, let the giving of thanks be your sacrifice to God. Your thanks and your love for others bring me joy, let these be your gifts.

Love,

Jesus

Your Infant Self

Jesus with infant

Jesus might say:

Oh, my little one, you are an infant to me (Jesus). Dependent, vulnerable, needy, whether you know it or not. And I am here, your Parent. Strong, supportive, ever-watching, wholly able to care for you. If only your infant-self knew how sturdy and reliable I am, how your fears would diminish. What peace you would find. This is my Prayer for you. I hold you dear.

Love,

Jesus

Heightened Spiritual Senses

"The Almighty God, the Lord, speaks ... Our God is coming, but not in silence" (Psalm 50 1;3).

My dearest child, I have given you heightened spiritual senses to hear me and feel me. Listen, practice, and learn to enhance your ability to hear me. I speak, I am always speaking. Listen and you will learn of my love.

Love,

The promise of passing pain

Little one, you are discouraged, and I see your pain. You are beautiful to me even in the worst of circumstances and I will give you strength and carry you on. Still, you follow Me, and you love Me, and I am well pleased. You are already still, in the depths of your soul, and deep down you know that I am God. I will lift you up and carry you and teach you to walk again. I am always with you even to the end of the age. I will never leave you nor forsake you. What you feel may be terrible, but the deepest Reality is good. It is well with your soul. Your travail will be shortened. I am the God who heals.

Love,

Jesus

Hummingbird's Sermon

Hummingbird nest

 Jesus might say:

Take a moment to consider the beautiful qualities of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience (Colossians 3:12). Allow them to deeply resonate within you, embracing them with open-heartedness. You may explore these virtues through engaging with Scripture, diving into an inspiring novel or film, or even observing someone whom you admire. Practice the art of focusing on one task, one quality, at a time, bringing mindfulness into your actions with a sense of freedom and faith. By doing so, you will effortlessly align yourself with what is right and good.

Building a life of integrity is akin to the graceful process of a hummingbird constructing her nest. The hummingbird does not anticipate in advance the creation of a magnificent miniature nest. Instead, she instinctively gathers an assortment of twigs, feathers, and other soft materials that are pleasing to her (the hummingbird's equivalent of attributes). She takes pleasure in mindfully assembling these pleasing elements, one at a time, with a sense of fulfillment. Similarly, for us, the delightful attributes of Colossians (above), serve as the foundation for cultivating character, integrity, and a life well-lived.

And then as if by magic, a beautiful, safe nest is created by God. And just like the hummingbird we do the "next right thing," and step out into a life of integrity.

Love,
