You often come to Me thinking your service to Me is the first priority, as though I am waiting for you to offer Me strength or usefulness. But hear Me: I am not served by human hands, as though I needed anything. I am the One who gives life and breath and everything you have. I glorify Myself not by being served by you, but by serving you.
Consider this quote by John Piper, for it reflects the truth of My heart toward you:
Suppose you are totally paralyzed and can do nothing for yourself but talk. And suppose a strong and reliable friend promised to live with you and do whatever you needed done. How could you glorify your friend if a stranger came to see you? Would you glorify his generosity and strength by trying to get out of bed and carry him? No! You would say, "Friend, please come lift me up, and would you put a pillow behind me so I can look at my guest. And would you please put my glasses on for me?" And so your visitor would learn from your requests that you are helpless and that your friend is strong and kind. You glorify your friend by needing him and asking him for help and counting on him.
In the same way, I am the One who serves you, and you glorify Me when you allow Me to nurture you, sustain you, and meet you in your need. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.
So, when you come to Me in your quiet time, do not come as though you are doing something for Me. That posture only puffs up pride and empties joy — or it may impede your coming to Me at all. Come as a child who needs to be nurtured. Come to be served. Come to receive. Come to rest. Come to be made happy in My Word and in My presence. Come greedy for God. When you do, fruit will grow naturally — because this is love: not that you loved Me, but that I loved you and sent My Son as an atoning sacrifice for your sins (1 John 4:10).
Being nurtured by Me is primary. Let Me serve you. Let Me strengthen you. Let Me love you. If you come to Me this way, your prayer life — and your whole life — will be transformed. For service to Me is only the fruit of abiding in My love. Apart from Me, you can do nothing (John 15:5).
